You hear Hy’s shrill whistling long before you spot him examining bundles of herbs at one of the market stalls with intense focus. When he sees you, he barely looks up. “Good, you’re here,” he says briskly. “I’m heading to Branch. The hanging cherry moss is at its peak right now, and I need to restock before the season shifts. But don’t worry, I’ll keep my eyes open for signs of tampering at our cache locations in that area.”

He picks up a basket and starts toward the edge of the marketplace. “The Rangers depend on those caches, and I depend on good ingredients. Might as well check both while I’m out that way. No reason a task can’t serve two purposes if you’re smart about it.”

He continues whistling as he heads toward the northern routes, already lost in whatever tune occupies his mind.
